GROSSGLOCKNER 2027

INTERNATIONAL EXPEDITION FOR LUNG TRANSPLANT PATIENTS

 

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Großglockner 2027 is the follow-up expedition to the Aconcagua project and will take place this time in Europe, in Austria. Once again, lung transplant patients and medical staff from across Europe will be taking part. The expedition is provisionally scheduled for 2–6 September 2027 and aims to demonstrate what is medically possible following a lung transplant.
 
Participants will attempt to climb the Großglockner (3,798 m) in Austria – Austria’s highest peak and a landmark of the Alps. The project combines physical challenge, scientific research and public outreach.

 

PARTICIPANTS

  • Up to 25–30 participants (approx. 15 lung transplant recipients and 15 support staff)
  • From 8 countries

 

OBJECTIVES

  • To inspire and encourage lung transplant recipients
  • To promote organ donation worldwide and raise awareness of the issue
  • To conduct scientific research into high-altitude conditions and the physiology of lung transplantation
  • Documenting the journey through professional film and media recordings

2 to 6 September 2027
Lucknerhütte – Stüdlhütte – Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte – Summit

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR PATIENTS

  • 1 year after lung transplantation
  • Normal lung function (e.g. ergospirometry ≥100 per cent)
  • Experience of high altitudes (>3,000 m)
  • No serious comorbidities
  • Medical clearance certificate and declaration of consent to participate in the study
